We advise you to start your touristic itinerary by visiting Plaza Mayor, just two minutes walk down Varillas St. At the Plaza you will find many restaurants and bars where you can relax having a beer and tapas. Your walk can continue along Rúa Mayor st, which is pedestrian and therefore very pleasant, towards “Casa de las Conchas”, the University of Salamanca, which is the oldest university in Spain, with illustrious professors such as Fray Luis de Leon and Francisco de Vitoria, who made Salamanca the cradle for International Law. Miguel de Unamuno was its Rector and personalities such as Fernando de Rojas and Antonio Nebrija (creator of the first grammar of Spanish) have studied here.
At the West Gate of the University you will spend a while until you discover the famous frog that you will find then in all the souvenir shops.
The walk can continue to the Church of the Jesuits (La Clerecía), the “Cathedral” (Old and New), climb the towers “Scala Coeli” and “Ieronimus”, and finish your walk at the cafeteria of the “Art Nouveau and Art Deco Museum” (Casa Lis).
In another time you can also visit the original church of San Marcos in Romanesque style and a circular floor outside, “Huerto de Calixto y Melibea” and “Convent and the Church of San Esteban”, where Christopher Columbus made friends with the Dominican monks, who helped him arrange a historical interview with Isabella the Catholic, decisive for the kings to support the discovery of America.
We recommend visiting the “Church of Santa María Magdalena” (also on Calle Zamora, a little below San Marcos, on the right, in the direction of the Plaza Mayor), and the “Church of the Immaculate.”
If you still have time, there are other monuments, such as the “Convent of the Dueñas”, the “Convent of Santa Clara” …
For golf lovers there are two very close fields.
- One at 16 minutes by car, located in Villamayor
- And another at 27 minutes located in Monte de Zarapicos
